March 2017 will see a dawn of a new coin era in British History. The Round Pound as we know it, will be replaced by new 12 sided coin. The present round shaped One Pound coin was introduced in 1983 and is the oldest British coin in circulation.
Due to increase in counterfeit activity of this coin, Government decided to replace them with more security featured coin. Nearly 1.4 Billion coin will replace Round Pound in March 2017.
The new coin is having a maximum diameter of 23.43 from point to point and weighs 8.75 gram and edge thickness of 2.8mm. The coin will be 12 sided with rounded edges and corners.
It is dual coloured coin which has been achieved by use of Nickel Brass on outer side and Nickel Plated Solid Alloy in inner side.
To Commemorate the last round pound, Royal Mint has issued the commemorative coin, which is more superior in quality than other coins which are inc circulation.
